How to Book a Speaker: A Decision Makers Guide

Booking a Speaker

In the over 25 years we have been booking speakers, we have met meeting planners and decision makers who are experts and those who are doing it for the first time with no prior knowledge. For the novice who may have been asked to find a speaker, this book will prove to be invaluable. Even for the expert who has been booking speakers for years, this book has insights you may find valuable.

Know What or Who You Want

We have worked with meeting planners who did not even know their budget or the speaking topic they were interested in. At the other extreme, we have had meeting planners who simply call to say they wanted this John Doe or this Jane Doe! Of course, we have worked with meeting planners who had said that they have no idea what they want. Their only criteria was, I’ll know who I want when I see it.

What’s Your Budget

Here is where there is so much confusion. Some meeting planners are very clear. They say that they have a budget range of $7,000 to $10,000. Others will say that they have an unlimited budget. Whenever we hear this, we are cautious. Too often we offer people with higher fees and they turn them down. When they finally book a speaker, it could be at a very low amount. Of course the opposite is also true. When a planner says they have a budget of $7,500, and then requrest and book a speaker with a fee of $30,000. This book will help you so that you don’t waste your time wading through a lot of different ideas and proposals. When you are clear what you need, a speakers bureau will be albe to offer suggestions that will save you time and frustration.

Too Many Requirements

While there are those who have no idea who they want, there have been those who have specific requests. We are reminded of the meeting planner who said the following were not negotiable: must not be a woman Must not be short Must not wear glasses Must not be bald Must not be overweight How to Book a Speaker: A Decision Maker’s Guide provides you with checklists and forms you can use to outline all the information you need to book a speaker. It will make a speakers bureau’s job easier and help them to find the perfect speaker for your group. Speakers Find This book Helpful If you are a new speaker, you will find this guide useful. You will know what the people who book speakers are looking for. You will see the questions they or the speakers bureau will ask you in order to see if you are perfect fit for their meeting.
